Career Path
Rejected in Bordeaux, loved in Marseille …
Born in Bruges, in the Bordeaux suburbs, on September 28, 1984, Mathieu Valbuena started playing football quite naturally. He kicked a football for the first time in neighboring Blanquefort, where he was seen by the Bordeaux Girondins football club. He joined the prestigious Aquitaine club’s training center, where he was quickly recognised and acknowledged for his natural technique, his love of the game and his willingness to work. Unfortunately, his trainers didn’t keep him because they didn’t think Mathieu had the capacity, especially physical to reach the top level. And so, with no contract, at the age of eighteen, he went to Langon-Castets club for a CFA2 training.
A great and outstanding national player!
He only stayed one season. During the following season, 2004-2005, he joined Libourne-Saint-Serin club, still remaining in the national squad. The first year wasn’t a success because Mathieu wasn’t part of the objectives of André Menot, the trainer at the time.Mid-season, André Menot was replaced by Didier Tholot who, from the first trainings saw Mathieu’s talent. And so, Tholot decides to let Mathieu be the club’s motor. Didier Tholot was right. With his new found confidence, Mathieu Valbuena plays an exceptional season, during which he scored nine goals in twenty nine matches. It was at the end of this season that he was elected top national player. His future is elsewhere, far from Libourne.Several prestigious national and international squads try to buy him. After long reflexion, Mathieu opts for OM, with whom he signs three seasons in summer 2006.
Gerets believes in Mathieu and launches his career
Wounded a few hours before the beginning of the season 2006, 2007, Mathieu had made up for lost time by the end of the year, by scoring an outstanding vital goal against Saint Etienne which qualified Marseille in the Champions League. He started the season as a substitute. The hierarchy is changed with arrival of Eric Gerets at the club. Impressed by Mathieu’s energy during the trainings, the Belgian trainer gave Mathieu another chance in a match against Liverpool. Mathieu jumps at the opportunity and scores an historic goal which brings success to OM. From this moment on, Mathieu has been included in more and more games. Mathieu is now an essential player in Eric Geret’s team.
